The Lofts and Surrounds
The area in which Jim lives is about 8klms North-East of Gympie town centre and is set on 10 acres on top of a hill. The loft faces North and is bathed in sunshine from early morning.
The Health of the birds is paramount and to this end Jim has installed wire floors under the box perches and slat floors in the middle of each section. This allows for easy cleaning as the droppings drop through the floor and stay dry below the loft. Agricultural Lime is used to kill any potential bugs on the floor and the droppings below.
Birds are watered from drinkers fitted to the fron of the loft. These are cleaned twice daily and refilled as necessary. Jim spares no expense when it comes to food and vitamins, but does not over treat the birds as he believes the immune system of the bird has to be the primary source of good health in pigeons. He only treats when it is necessary and inoculates against pox each year.
The loft training is identical to the training of his race birds and the tossing is carried out from various distances up to 70 kilometres , then a final toss from 105 kilometres before the first lead up race.
The Loft is fitted with the latest in ETS technology, we use and recommend the TIPES Electronic Timing System distributed by QA Distribution (John Koster (02) 42853536 0425835955) of Wollongong and have installed a dual trap and MC2100 clock as well as the Tipes One Loft Race program on the Laptop installed in the loft to monitor all birds.
